Mallesons Information Evening Review

by Andrea Ho, Careers Director, CLSS.

Mallesons Stephen Jaques, one of the top fifty international law firms in the world, held an information night on employment opportunities in Hong Kong/Mainland China on Tuesday 24 October 2006. With offices in Sydney, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai among others, Mallesons is well placed to give its employees broad insight into the international practice of commercial law.

Approximately seventy students from several universities attended the session, which provided an excellent opportunity to gain insight into working overseas. Helpful advice was given by the Mallesons representatives present, including Adrienne Showering (Partner, Hong Kong Office), Peter Hillerstrom (Graduated, Hong Kong Office), Li-Enn Koo (Head of Human Resource, Asia), Sam Garner (Graduate Resourcing Manager, Sydney Office) and Sara Eddy (Graduate Recruitment Consultant, Sydney Office). The advice included:

  • Australian law degrees are effectively the same as Hong Kong law degrees in admission to Hong Kong. That is, graduates from both Australian and Hong Kong universities undergo the same PCLL requirements.

  • Mallesons is unique in offering both July and December clerkships, as most law firms only offer December clerkships. Moreover, Mallesons clerkships are shorter than other traditional law firms, providing an opportunity to take on other internship opportunities.

  • Mallesons’ Beijing and Shanghai offices are rapidly expanding, with opportunities opening up into the future for both graduates and more experienced lawyers. Those interested should apply to the Hong Kong office. The person to contact is Kristine Tang ( People & Development Assistant Manager) and her email address is Kristine.Tang@mallesons.com. Please also check Mallesons’ website: www.mallesons.com.

  • Main business for Mallesons in China is to provide its client advice on foreign law.

Other information they shared with us includes:

  • Mallesons offers its staffs opportunities to be involved in giant deals with large corporations including the Commonwealth Bank and ABN Amro.

  • The culture in Hong Kong office is a lot more interactive given its design of the office.

  • To work in Hong Kong office, knowing Chinese is not mandatory but preferable.

  • Salary for traineeship in Hong Kong is 38 000 Hong Kong dollars per month

The presentation was very informative, and a great way to learn more about a truly international law firm. Thanks go to Mallesons for organizing this amazing event.
